U.S. News Releases 2022 Ranking of Best Medical Schools

U.S. News released the 2022 ranking of Research and Primary Care Medical Schools. U.S. News surveyed 191 medical and osteopathic schools that were accredited in 2020 by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or the American Osteopathic Association. They added this data to the results of peer assessment surveys to determine both overall rankings and medical field specialty rankings. Of the 191 schools receiving surveys, 129 responded. Of these 129 allopathic and osteopathic medical schools, 123 were ranked in both research and primary rankings. The remaining six schools were unranked due to having only provisional, preliminary, or pre-accreditation. Schools needed full accreditation to be included in the rankings.

Highlights of the 2022 medical school rankings

Harvard University maintained its number one spot this year in the research medical schools. There was a lot of shuffling in the remainder of the top ten. New York University jumped two spots from number four to number two, while Johns Hopkins tumbled from second place to seventh, and University of Pennsylvania (Perelman) dropped from the third spot to the ninth.

Primary care medical school rankings had shake-ups as well. University of Washington went from a two-way tie for second place to take the top spot from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, which fell to number three. Harvard University rose two spots from number ten to number eight, making way for the University of Massachusetts to join the top ten in the final spot.
