University of Virginia School of Medicine 2020-21 secondary application essay questions

UVA essay #1

Why are you interested in attending the University of Virginia School of Medicine? What factors will be most important to you in choosing a medical school? (350 word limit)

The University of Virginia School of Medicine’s mission values excellence in education, research and patient care. They pride themselves on providing integrated science curriculum and clinical curriculum. This prompt is an applicant’s opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of UVA’s program, and one’s suitedness for it. UVA also offers dual track programs and a PhD program.

To respond to the second question successfully, it’s likely a strong response will highlight important factors in choosing a medical school that align with a core aspect of UVA’s mission, curriculum or opportunities. Again, this is a moment to demonstrate your fit for UVA, not what UVA can do for you. Do you value what they value?

UVA essay #2

How will you contribute to the diversity of your medical school class and the University of Virginia School of Medicine? (350 word limit)

Perhaps your background, lifestyle or identity is distinctive. How have you been challenged, denied access, or gained access to an opportunity based on your background, lifestyle, or identity? How have you benefitted from a diverse aspect of who you are? How have you handled exclusion, personally or professionally? How do you practice inclusion, personally or professionally?

UVA essay #3

Describe a situation which you found challenging. How did you manage it? (350 word limit)

This prompt sounds rather easy. However, it is likely the admission committee will be paying attention not only to what you find challenging but how you have grown and learned from a challenging situation.

Medicine is rife with challenges. Doctors are leaders, and good leaders adapt and reflect. This prompt is an assessment of your strengths, your core qualities that deal with a challenge, in a way that shows maturity and suggests leadership potential. How you reflect on a challenging situation should demonstrate true insight and growth.
